Horizons 67 is a treat for all lovers of quality, in depth drum & bass music, and comes courtesy of Italian bass junkie Dabs. His funky, driven d&b has found acclaim across the world, from his native land, throughout Europe, and over to the US and Australia. Releases on Dispatch, Citrus and Horizons have secured him regular bookings right across the drum & bass universe. Since first releasing in 2007, Dabs has established his name at the forefront of the new skool, teaming up on many occasions with the likes of Cern, Ant TC1 and Cause4Concern. It’s safe to say that Dabs is surefire hot right now, and this comes across in spades on his new 12” for Horizons.
Skull & Bones kicks us off, with its funky, lilting intro, which drops into some rolling Eastern effects. Bass is never far away, underpinning MC Kwality’s deep, resonating rhymes. Things get minimal after the intro, with booming pads taking the helm, along with continued percussion and mini-breaks. The atmosphere is menacing, whilst maintaining musicality. Skull & Bones is pure soundsystem fodder, ready to wreck any sound, anywhere. Get ready to hear this one at all the festivals this summer.
CRAZE “Sick release!!”
Inside Info “Love Skull and Bones, awesome Groove!!”
John B “love em both thanks”
The flip is Hourglass, on which Dabs takes us on a journey into the emotional, mystical side of d&b. The mid-tempo opening revolves around ticks, bells and wobbling bass effects, before Mortem’s beautiful, evocative vocals make an appearance. Your soul and heart will be lifted by Hourglass, which shows off Dabs’ range and depth of expression. Drift along as Dabs and Mortem take you away, with the sublime accompaniment perfectly matching the vocal range. The breakdown at the half way point is something else, like nothing you’ll have heard all year. 2013 is already shaping up to be the biggest and best year so far for both Horizons and Dabs, and they come together at the perfect time. Skull & Bones and Hourglass are a fantastic introduction for newcomers, or the perfect illustration of the label’s and artist’s power for veterans. Seriously essential.
