Since the beginning of his career, the name Audio has been a synonym for unmatched power and a colossal presence within the drum & bass community. Competition have crumbled beneath his output, with the producer quickly becoming revered for not only his sound, but for the dark, thematic energy he brought to every live set across the globe.
Whether it’s causing bass-lead devastation at renowned festivals, like the Czech Republic’s Let it Roll, or the darkest corner of notorious London hotspots, there’s no denying one of the genre’s most profound overlords.
Back in 2010, Gilles Peterson recorded a special Brownswood Basement show focusing on the evolution of drum & bass through the 90s and into the 00s. It was by no means a comprehensive history of the genre, but it did represent an excellent snapshot of the tunes that struck a chord with Gilles back then. 100% vinyl (and acetates), Gilles spent the best part of a day rummaging through hundreds of records and picked out around 40 of his favourite tracks from the likes of Alex Reece, Peshay, Goldie, Drumagick, Roni Size and Photek… then @alex-patchwork got deep in the mix. Here then, is the first hour-long mix that made up that show – no links, jingles or drops – just the music. We hope you enjoy it.
As an original part of the Metalheadz crew (his name is inked on the spine of the label’s first ever release), Doc Scott’s been a constant influence and driving force behind 170bpm music whether working on Reinforced, HDZ, Bukem’s Goodlooking imprint or on his own 31 Records. Over time since he first appeared the Coventry born producer’s watched the scene he loves weather changes, or as his biography puts it “from it’s transitions from rave to hardcore, jungle-techno to tech step to d&b, from UK based to a global scene and industry, Doc Scott has seen it all and been there for the entire journey.” He’s quite famously described by his long time friend Goldie as “king of the rollers” and he’s the type of DJ that when he speaks, you simply put up and listen.
Hailing from the Netherlands, @signaldrumandbass aka Jonathan Kievit is the latest to join fellow countrymen Noisia, Black Sun Empire, June Miller, Maduk, Posij and Lenzman in the ever growing book of Dutch drum & bass exports. At just 15 years of age he’s already clocked up a release with seminal imprint Renegade Hardware and now with an amazing career ahead delivers his debut for Critical’s Binary series.
